I have used all different types of meal planning and prep through the years. In the plan I am currently using I make all the meals for the week in one night and package in individual containers. I love this for our life right now with two busy teenagers, because often everyone has different schedules. With healthy meals ready to go in the fridge, everyone can grab and go. I know my kids always have healthy meal options and I never hear “Mom, what’s for dinner?”  Bonus, I only have the mess of cooking one day a week….I’m a messy cook so that is a big bonus! I make smaller portions because I like eating smaller meals and more often.

Step 1: Purchase containers for the week’s meals. I get mine at Costco, 25 for less than $10. They are the perfect size and hold up great after repeated use in the dishwasher. For soups, some fresh salads and overnight oatmeal I use glass canning jars.

Step 2: Pick your meals for the week! I will provide examples of what our week looks like in future blogs. Many of your family’s favorite  meals can be made and divided into portions in advance. I label the meals and let the family know the ones with fresh veggies need eaten first in the week. When brainstorming meals I often try and pick one of from each category to help inspire me and give some variety throughout the week.  Example categories: Soup, Salad, Asian, Mexican, Italian, Comfort Food, Meat & Veggies.

Step 3: Shop. Be sure to have a detailed list of meals and recipes so you have everything. I plan meals, shop and cook in the same day so it’s fresh in my mind. Be mindful of what is fresh, in season and on sale. Choose your meals accordingly.

 

Step 4: Get Ready to cook . Get ready because it’s about to get fun and messy! I like to be quick and strategic, so I am literally making parts of all of the meals at the same time. I map out areas of the kitchen: cutting areas for veggies separate from meat, all the empty meal containers laid out so pieces can be put in as they are finished, ingredients and tools. Take a look at your meals and cooking times so you can plan out cooking order….like getting everything that needs oven cook time in the oven right away.

Step 5: Cook away!   Make sure you give the meals time to cool fully before putting lids on. Try not to overcook meats and veggies since they will be reheated. Relax and have fun! Know that each week it will get easier and you will become more efficient at working on multiple meals at the same time.

Take some notes during the week as you enjoy the meals on things you like, things you would change, preferences of your family. You will be able to learn and get better week to week.
